Internet Security for Military Families at Home and Abroad
Internet security for military members and their families isn’t as straightforward as it is for other consumers. Here’s a look at how to stay safe online.
While cybersecurity threats are something every person with an Internet connection needs to guard against, some cybersecurity threats are unique to members of the military and theiry families. Realities like frequent Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves and deployments, transitional housing, reliance on public and temporary Internet networks, and the like, mean there are more points of access for cybercriminals.
No one’s immune to the threat. Even military contractors working with the Department of Defense (DoD) can find themselves on the losing side of a ransomware battle.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to stay safe. Whether you’re currently stationed here in the states but could face a move soon, or you’re already scheduled to deploy next month, here are some ways to protect your and your family’s Internet connections while on the move.
Why Military Families Are Especially Vulnerable Online
There are several reasons why military families face greater vulnerability in digital and online security. For example, disrupted connectivity during PCS moves or deployments can mean making risky decisions to get online, such as using unsecured public networks. Using an unsecured and public Internet connection at a fast food restaurant may seem convenient but, without a virtual private network (VPN) or good security software on your device, it could lead to identity theft or a malware attack.
Here’s a closer look at possible vulnerabilities before we explore how to mitigate them.
Frequent Relocations = Repeated Setup of New Networks
Every time members of the military and their families relocate, they have to set up new utilities, including Internet. With each new network comes a new modem and router, new passwords, and so on. Sometimes, that new hardware isn’t as secure as what you were using before.
Use of Public Networks During Transitions
Transition is a way of life for military families, as is travel. That means relying on WiFi wherever you are, whether that’s in an airport, a hotel, temporary base housing, etc. While the universal nature of WiFi is nice, many publicly available networks lack encryption and carry the risk of third-party monitoring.
Potential OPSEC Exposure
When keeping loved ones in the loop, there’s always a risk of potential operational security (OPSEC) exposure. It’s essential to be cautious. Oversharing deployment, housing, or travel information online isn’t safe. Even something as small as a move date in a Facebook post can be risky in a military context.
Cybersecurity Best Practices for Military Households
When it comes to building a safe and secure Internet at home and while traveling, best practices are essential for families with deployed loved ones or who move often due to PCS orders.
What the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Offers Military Members
DISA provides free antivirus software to government employees and defense contractors who have approved email addresses. In addition, the DISA Home Use program licenses McAfee Internet Security for personal or privately purchased devices.
Choose a Secure Router (or Upgrade the Default)
While it can be convenient to use the router that came with your Internet service, these use default Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs) and passwords, which makes them less secure than routers you could invest in yourself. You’re better of choosing something with modern security features like WPA3 encryption, built-in firewalls, and mobile controls.
Use a VPN When on Public or Temporary Networks
When you have to use a public or temporary Internet connection, a VPN is your best friend. Available for use on smartphones, tablets, and with PC operating systems and MacOS, a VPN encrypts online activity and reduces exposure on public WiFi networks at airports, hotels, and even on base. Be sure to do your research and use a VPN provider with a strong track record for keeping users safe and secure.
Update Device Software and Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Once you have an Internet setup that’s secure and works for you, it’s important to regularly update firmware, phones, computers, and apps. Plus, be sure to add two-factor authentication on everything from Instagram to email to banking apps for another layer of protection.
On your computer(s), be sure you’re running antivirus software and anti-malware software (i.e.. Norton, McAfee, etc.), regardless of whether it’s a Mac or Windows PC. It would also be wise to brush up on how phishing attacks and spyware work in order to stay aware of and safe from those threats.
Avoid Oversharing and Posting Your Real-Time Location Online
While it was already mentioned above, the warning bears repeating: The OPSEC dangers of sharing too much online — such as live-sharing location, unit movements, or deployment updates — are real. When in doubt, just don’t say anything on public platforms.
Segment Your Smart Home Devices
For military families who enjoy a tech-heavy home, it might be necessary to segment any smart home devices through guest networks or virtual local area networks (VLANs). Doing this will keep your laptops, work devices, financial accounts, and more separate from potentially packable IoT tech, including smart speakers, thermostats, or cameras.
Specialized Tips for Overseas Deployment and Travel
When you’re deployed overseas or doing a lot of traveling, there’s a different set of tips and tricks for service members and other temporarily stationed personnel to stay secure and connected internationally.
Know if Your VPN Works Internationally
If you rely on a VPN to safely browse and communicate from a smartphone or your computer, you should know that some countries restrict or block VPN use. Be sure to test your VPN’s compatibility before relying on it abroad, just in case you need to make another choice.
Use Encrypted Messaging and Cloud Backups
Cyberthreats are always evolving. To stay ahead of threats, use apps that offer end-to-end encryption (i.e.. Signal, WhatsApp) along with services like Google Drive or iCloud that offer automatic syncing. Do this with two-factor authentication turned on, and you have a much safer option.
Secure Access to U.S. Content
One of the most comforting rituals a deployed service member can engage in is watching a favorite show or program while deployed. Of course, it’s important to safely and legally access U.S.-based content. While illegal streaming tools certainly exist, many of these can compromise your device or even open you up to scams. Instead, use ISP-approved apps or services.
Choosing the Right Internet Provider for Digital Security
Depending on where you’re stationed, you may or may not have options when it comes to selecting an Internet provider. If you do have options, select providers that prioritize security, privacy tools, and responsive support, especially when managing a household remotely or from a base.
Look for ISPs That Offer Built-In Network Protection
When you’re looking for peace of mind regarding your Internet security, look for an ISP that offers good built-in network protection. Do they offer firewalls? Malware scanners? Parental control tools? Choose from providers that prioritize network-level protection.
Prioritize Providers with Strong Customer Service and Support
Strong customer service should also be on your short list when considering an Internet company. When you have a family member deployed, fast, reliable support is incredibly important should anything go wrong with the Internet.
Use Provider Tools to Customize Network Security Settings
Being able to customize your security setting is a big win, and some providers offer just that through admin tools via mobile apps or online portals that are easy to use and give you more meaningful control. While such features may seem small, they allow for managing everything from quality of service and guest access to smart home controls.
