Your Cox Plan vs. Spectrum: Switch Now or Wait?

Should you switch from Cox to Spectrum now or wait? Compare the cost of staying, the free Mobile line, and Savings Guarantee rules to find your cheapest path.

Your Internet bill says Spectrum now, and those big "Hi!" signs around town keep promising savings. So should you trade your plan from Cox to Spectrum? Switching from Cox to Spectrum can trim your bill, or it can cost you a discount you already locked in.

The good news is that you don't have to guess. Let's look at three paths (staying on your Cox plan, switching now, and switching when your promo ends) and find the cheapest one for your household.

Quick Answer

  • You can stay put: Your Cox pricing, promos, and term agreements carry over unless you choose to change them.
  • Spectrum's prices: Plans run $30 to $80 a month for the first year, then $50 to $125 a month, with no data caps or annual contracts.
  • The free Mobile line: Cox Internet customers without Cox Mobile can get one Spectrum Mobile Unlimited line free for a year. It's worth $30 to $40 a month if it replaces a line you already pay for.
  • The $1,000 Savings Guarantee: You need Spectrum Internet plus at least two Unlimited Mobile lines switched from one of the three largest national carriers.
  • The deciding factor: Promo timing. Switch too early, and you waste cheap Cox months. Wait too long, and you could pay full price or miss the free Mobile line.

What Changed for Cox Customers (and What Didn't)

Charter Communications, the company behind Spectrum, completed its Cox acquisition on August 20, 2026. Spectrum plans and pricing went live in former Cox markets on September 16.

Your service now runs under Spectrum's Residential Terms of Service as of October 7. Spectrum still honors existing Cox promotions and contract terms, and you don't have to switch to a Spectrum plan. Spectrum's team confirmed that billing cycles and prices carry over unless you request a change.

In other words, doing nothing is a real option, at least for now. Before you pick up the phone to switch, it pays to know what it costs to stay.

Start With Your Current Cox Bill

Grab your latest bill (or open the Spectrum app) and work through these five steps:

  1. Find your promo or price lock end date. Cox promos ran for 12 or 24 months. Customers who bundled Cox Internet with Cox Mobile could get a 3-year price lock on 500 Mbps and 1 Gig plans, or 5 years on 2 Gig. Check the offer details on your bill, or ask Spectrum for the exact date.
  2. Find your regular rate. Cox prices rose about $21 a month on average once a promo ended. The standard rate for Cox's 500 Mbps plan climbed from $80 to $95 to $100 a month through recent increases.
  3. Check for a term agreement. Cox sold optional 12- and 24-month agreements with early termination fees. If you signed one, ask Spectrum whether changing plans triggers a fee.
  4. Add up data overages. Cox plans include 1.25 TB of data a month, and each extra 50 GB costs $10, up to $100 a month.
  5. Total your extras. Include WiFi equipment rental and add-ons like unlimited data or Cox Complete Care (which is ending on October 22), so you’re able to compare your full monthly cost.

By the end, you'll have the two numbers that matter most: what you pay today and what you'll pay the month after your promo ends.

Current Spectrum Internet Prices in Former Cox Areas

Spectrum's first-year prices look great next to most Cox regular rates. Keep in mind that every tier jumps after 12 months.

Plan Download speed Year 1 price Price after 12 months WiFi router
Internet 100 Up to 100 Mbps $30/mo $50/mo $10/mo extra
Internet 500 Up to 500 Mbps $40/mo $75-85/mo $10/mo extra
Internet 1 Gig Up to 1 Gbps $60/mo $95-105/mo Included
Internet 2 Gig Up to 2 Gbps (select areas) $80/mo $110-125/mo Included

Every plan includes unlimited data, no annual contract, and no early termination fee. You'll pay a $20 activation fee, or $50 if you want professional installation. Spectrum waives the router fee on the two lower tiers when you bundle Mobile or TV.

If your household streams in 4K and downloads games, Spectrum’s unlimited data is a nice perk. A home that goes 200 GB over Cox's cap each month pays $40 in overages, and that charge disappears with Spectrum. You can find the full plan breakdown on our Spectrum provider page.

What the Free Spectrum Mobile Line Is Really Worth

Free mobile service sounds great, and it can be if you’re currently paying for a phone bill or looking to start a line. Over a year, that line saves you $360 or more, but if you don't need another line, you’re not saving anything.

New and existing Internet customers in former Cox Communications areas qualify if they don't already have Cox Mobile. You need Spectrum Internet and a new line activation, and you claim the offer at CoxIsNowSpectrum.com.

Spectrum's own Mobile pricing breaks down like this:

  • Unlimited line cost: $30 a month per line, but a single line on its own runs $40 a month. Two lines cost $60 a month total.
  • What the offer covers: your first line only, and you need AutoPay.
  • Upgrade costs: moving the free line to Unlimited Plus adds $10 a month, and Unlimited Plus Premium adds $20.
  • Year two: the line bills at the standard rate, so a one-line household goes from $0 to $40 a month.

A live address check by Utility Search also found that Spectrum applies the savings as bill credits, the phone isn't included, and data may slow after 30 GB in a month.

Want to check your savings quickly? Multiply what you pay each month for your current phone line by 12. That's what the free line is worth to you. Then compare your current phone bill to Spectrum's $40 single-line rate for year two.

Who Qualifies for the $1,000 Savings Guarantee

A guaranteed $1,000 is hard to ignore, but read the fine print first. Spectrum built the guarantee for households switching their Internet and at least two phone lines, so many former Cox customers won't qualify. If you do, Spectrum promises more than $1,000 in first-year savings when you bundle Internet and Mobile.

Requirement What it means for you
Spectrum Internet Advantage or faster You move to a Spectrum Internet plan. A legacy Cox plan doesn't count.
At least two Unlimited or Unlimited Plus Mobile lines One free line alone won't qualify.
Lines switched from one of the three largest national carriers Lines from smaller carriers, prepaid brands, or Cox Mobile likely don't count.
Upload your old wireless and Internet bills Spectrum compares your old bills to your new Spectrum costs.
Credit paid over the year If you save less than $1,000, Spectrum credits the difference in monthly installments.

In Spectrum's own example, a customer whose bill review shows $800 in first-year savings gets the missing $200 as monthly credits over the year.

Run your numbers with Spectrum's savings calculator before you commit. Also ask whether the free promotional line counts toward the two-line minimum.

Should You Switch From Cox to Spectrum Now or Later?

To help you decide, we priced three paths over 24 months for four sample households on Cox's 500 Mbps plan.

Household Stay on Cox Switch to Spectrum now Switch when Cox promo ends
Cox promo ends in 2 months ($55 now, $100 after); pays $50/mo for one phone line elsewhere $3,510 $1,980 $1,940
Cox price lock has 14 months left ($50 now, $100 after); pays $50/mo for one phone line $2,900 $1,980 $1,800
Same as above, but the free Mobile line offer ends before they switch $2,900 $1,980 $2,200
Cox price lock has 14 months left ($50 now, $100 after); keeps current phone plan $1,700 $1,500 $1,100

Figures assume Spectrum Internet 500 at $40/mo for 12 months, then $85/mo (Utility Search); the household's own router; and a free Mobile line that replaces the current phone line, then bills $40/mo as a single line (Spectrum). Cox rate after promo based on the 500 Mbps standard rate. Excludes taxes, fees, and activation. Least expensive path in bold.

Staying on Your Cox Plan

Staying makes sense only while your Cox promo or price lock beats Spectrum's first-year price. After it ends, you pay the Cox regular rate plus any data overages. Spectrum can also change legacy plan rates over time, so budget for the price to go up.

Switching to Spectrum Now

Switch now if your Cox promo has already ended, you pay overage fees most months, or you want the free Mobile line before the offer changes. You give something up, though. Spectrum's 12-month promo clock starts the day you switch, and you lose any cheap months left on your Cox deal.

Switching When Your Cox Promo Ends

This path wins in most of our examples because it stacks your remaining Cox discount and Spectrum's 12-month promo back to back. You skip the regular rate between the two deals. The catch is timing, since Spectrum can change or end its offers before your switch date, as the third row of the table shows.

Why Promo Timing Decides It

Cox and Spectrum follow the same pricing playbook. You get a cheap intro period, then a much higher regular rate, and your goal is to dodge that regular rate for as long as you can.

Switch while your Cox promo has months left, and you give up those cheap months. Wait until after it ends, and you pay full price for no reason.

A CNET analysis found Spectrum prices rose an average of $37 a month after one or two years, compared with $28 a month for Cox after two years. On Spectrum Internet 500, the jump from $40 to $85 a month adds $540 to your yearly bill.

Use your promo end date to pick your move:

  • Promo already ended: Switch now.
  • Promo ends within about 2 months: Switch now or wait. The cost difference stays small, so let the free Mobile line deadline break the tie.
  • Promo or price lock has 6 or more months left: Stay for now and set a reminder for one month before it ends.
  • Paying Cox data overages most months: Switch now, since Spectrum has no data cap.

After you switch, set one more reminder for month 11 of your Spectrum promo. Spectrum has no contracts, so you can shop again or ask about current offers before the price climbs.

What to Ask Spectrum Before You Switch

A quick call or chat (about five minutes) can confirm the numbers that decide your path. Feel free to borrow this script.

"Hi, I'm a former Cox customer deciding whether to keep my current plan or move to a Spectrum plan. Can you help me with a few questions?

  • What's the exact end date of my current promotion or price lock, and what will my monthly rate be the month after it ends?
  • Am I on a term agreement? If I switch to a Spectrum Internet plan, will I owe an early termination fee?
  • What would Spectrum Internet 500 cost at my address for the first 12 months, and what's the price after that? Does that include the WiFi router?
  • Am I eligible for the free year of Spectrum Mobile? Is there a deadline to claim it, and what will that line cost after the year ends?
  • If I add a second line, would I qualify for the Savings Guarantee? Does the free line count toward the two-line minimum?
  • Can you send me a summary of these prices by email or in this chat?"

Save the chat transcript or email. If a rep promises a price or credit, you'll want it in writing when your first new bill arrives.

FAQs

Will my Cox price go up if I don't switch to a Spectrum plan?

Your current promo or price lock stays in place until its end date. After that, you move to your plan's regular rate. Spectrum hasn't announced changes to legacy Cox pricing, but Cox raised its 500 Mbps and 1 Gig rates in 2026, so expect your regular rate to change over time.

Can I go back to my old Cox plan after switching to Spectrum?

Probably not. Cox now sells Spectrum plans, so once you leave a legacy Cox plan, you likely can't sign up for it again. Treat the switch as a one-way move and confirm your numbers first.

Does switching to a Spectrum plan cancel my Cox price lock?

Yes. Your price lock belongs to your Cox plan, and a Spectrum plan replaces it. You'll pay Spectrum's 12-month promo price, then its regular rate.

Do I need new equipment if I move to a Spectrum plan?

Spectrum says former Cox customers don't need to replace equipment like routers. If you move up to gig speeds and use your own modem, check that it can handle the faster plan.

Can I keep my phone number with the free Spectrum Mobile line?

Yes. Spectrum transfers your number during activation, which takes anywhere from a few hours to 48 hours. Your old carrier cancels your service once the transfer finishes.

What happens to the free Mobile line if I cancel Spectrum Internet?

You need an active Spectrum Internet account to keep Spectrum Mobile service. If you cancel Internet, plan to move your number to another carrier.

Does the free Mobile line count toward the Savings Guarantee?

Spectrum hasn't published an answer. The guarantee requires at least two Unlimited lines switched from a major carrier, so ask Spectrum to confirm how it treats the free line before you count on both offers.
