Cox-Spectrum Merger FAQs

Cox is now Spectrum. Get clear answers on the merger timeline, the free Spectrum Mobile line, data caps, contracts, and what to do if you're moving soon.

The Cox-Spectrum merger is official: Charter Communications (CHTR), Spectrum's parent company, completed its $34.5 billion merger with Cox Communications on August 20, 2026. Less than a month later, Spectrum products and pricing arrived in former Cox markets.

That’s a lot of change happening for more than 11 million former Cox households and businesses. To help smooth the transition, we’ve rounded up the questions Cox family users have been asking the most over the last several months, from the free mobile line to data caps to moving, and answered each one in plain English.

Merger Basics and Timeline

Did the Cox and Spectrum merger actually happen?

Yes. Charter Communications completed its transaction with Cox Communications on August 20, 2026. The deal valued Cox at about $34.5 billion when it was announced in May 2025. It cleared its last major regulatory hurdle when California regulators signed off on August 13, 2026.

Why will the company be called Cox if everything is becoming Spectrum?

The names can feel like a game of musical chairs. Within a year of the deal closing, the parent company will change its corporate name to Cox Communications. The name on your bill, the trucks, and the stores will still be Spectrum in every market.

In other words, “Cox Communications” will appear on corporate letterhead, and Spectrum will stay on everything you see and pay for.

What's the timeline for the Cox to Spectrum transition?

The biggest change you'll notice already happened on September 16, 2026, which Spectrum called Spectrum Day. Spectrum greeted its new customers with a nationwide "Hi!" ad campaign, so those giant inflatable "Hi!" signs around town make sense now.

The full transition runs from the May 2025 announcement to early 2028:

Date What happened or what's next
May 2025 Charter and Cox announce the deal.
February 2026 The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approves the combination.
August 13, 2026 California regulators give final approval.
August 20, 2026 The deal closes, and the free Spectrum Mobile line offer begins.
September 16, 2026 Spectrum products, packaging, and pricing launch in former Cox markets.
By August 2027 Parent company expected to take the Cox Communications name; Spectrum's Customer Commitment expected to reach former Cox customers.
By early 2028 Cox customer service expected to be fully returned to the U.S. (an 18-month plan announced in September 2026).

Which areas are affected by the merger?

Every former Cox market is part of the switch. Spectrum Day reached more than 11 million homes and businesses, including Las Vegas, New Orleans, Norfolk, Oklahoma City, Orange County, Phoenix, Providence, and San Diego.

Local news outlets have confirmed the switch in other former Cox communities, including Baton Rouge, Santa Barbara, Gainesville, Florida's Gulf Coast, Omaha, and Hampton Roads. Spectrum now serves 45 states.

New Perks and Policy Changes

What is the free Spectrum Mobile line offer, and am I eligible?

If you have Cox Internet and aren’t already subscribed to Cox Mobile, Spectrum will give you one Mobile line free for a year as a welcome gift. The offer started when the deal closed and was still available when Spectrum launched in former Cox markets on September 16.

Before you sign up, ask Spectrum two questions:

  1. How much will the line cost after the free year ends?
  2. Do you need to keep Internet service active to keep it free?

Thinking bigger than one line? Spectrum also offers a $1,000 Savings Guarantee for customers who bundle Internet with two Mobile lines. If you don't save more than $1,000 in your first year, Spectrum covers the difference.

I already have Cox Mobile. What happens to my phone plan?

Nothing changes unless you want it to. Spectrum built the free-line offer for Cox Internet customers without Cox Mobile, so unfortunately, current Cox Mobile customers don't qualify. Your current plan, pricing, and discounts stay as they are for now.

Will I get credits for service outages now?

They're on the way. Spectrum's Customer Commitment includes credits for outages longer than two hours, and former Cox customers are expected to get access within a year of the August 2026 close.

Is Cox customer service changing?

Yes, starting with where your call gets answered. Spectrum plans to fully return Cox's customer service function to the U.S. over 18 months, staffed by U.S.-based employees.

The Customer Commitment also promises 24/7 customer service and a technician sent the same day when you request one before 5 p.m.

Will prices go down after the merger?

Possibly, if you choose a Spectrum plan. Charter CEO Chris Winfrey has said average Internet, Mobile, and TV pricing is lower with Spectrum than with Cox. Your savings will depend on your plan, so compare your exact bill against Spectrum's offers at your address.

Plan and Product Differences

Does Spectrum have data caps like Cox?

No. Spectrum home Internet has no data caps. Cox residential plans include 1.25 TB (1,280 GB) of data a month. If you go over, Cox adds 50 GB blocks at $10 each, up to $100 a month.

As of October 2026, Cox plans still list that allowance. If your household streams in 4K or games online most nights, a Spectrum plan crosses data overages off your worry list.

How do Cox and Spectrum Internet plans compare?

Data and contracts make the biggest difference between the two. Top speeds are similar, and availability depends on your address, so check Spectrum plans and pricing near you for details.

Feature Cox Spectrum
Monthly data 1.25 TB included; $10 per extra 50 GB, up to $100 No data caps
Contracts Optional 12- or 24-month term agreements with early termination fees No annual contracts
Top advertised speed Up to 2 Gig (Go Beyond Fast) Up to 1 Gig widely; 2 Gig and 7 Gig in select areas
Mobile bundle perk Price lock of three to five years with a Cox Mobile line on select tiers $1,000 Savings Guarantee with Internet plus two Mobile lines
Welcome offer None for current customers One free Mobile line for a year for eligible Cox Internet customers

What's replacing Contour TV?

If you switch to Spectrum TV, you'll use Spectrum's tools instead of Contour. That includes the Spectrum TV App for live channels at home and on the go, and the Xumo Stream Box, which puts live TV and streaming apps on one screen. You'll manage included streaming apps through Spectrum App Central.

Eligible Spectrum TV plans include up to $131 a month in streaming app value at no extra cost. Sports fans in Los Angeles and Las Vegas also gain access to Spectrum SportsNet LA, the TV home of the Dodgers.

Keeping your Cox TV plan? Your Contour box keeps working. Our Cox-to-Spectrum guide covers what to do with it if you switch.

What happens to Cox Homelife, Cox Voice, and Cox Complete Care?

As of October 2026, Charter hasn't announced changes to these services. Cox says current plans, prices, discounts, and equipment stay the same for now, so they should keep working as they do today.

Cox Voice customers have a direct counterpart in Spectrum Voice, which includes unlimited nationwide calling and is available bundled or on its own. Homelife and Complete Care don't have an obvious Spectrum match. If you rely on either, ask how switching your Internet or TV to a Spectrum plan would affect them before you change, since moving one service can change a bundle discount.

What happens to Cox ConnectAssist and other affordable Internet programs?

Your ConnectAssist plan stays in place unless you change it. Spectrum's closest match is Spectrum Internet Assist, but the two programs use different eligibility rules.

Program Who qualifies Price
Cox ConnectAssist Households in programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, Public Housing, and Pell Grant. $30 a month
Spectrum Internet Assist Households in programs such as the National School Lunch Program, or seniors 65 and older who receive SSI. Varies by location

Some ConnectAssist households may not qualify for Internet Assist. Confirm your eligibility for Internet Assist before you cancel or change ConnectAssist. You may also qualify for the federal Lifeline discount on top of a provider plan.

Will my Panoramic WiFi settings, parental controls, or Elite Gamer carry over?

If you stay on your Cox plan, your settings will keep working as they do today. If you switch to a Spectrum plan, you'll get new Spectrum equipment managed through the My Spectrum app, so you'll need to set up your home network again.

A few tips make the swap smoother:

  • Reuse your WiFi name and password. Your phones and smart TVs will reconnect automatically, so you won't need to hunt for a password.
  • Screenshot your parental controls first. Note schedules, blocked sites, and device names in the Cox WiFi by Spectrum (formerly Panoramic WiFi) app before you return your Cox gateway.

Contracts and Account Questions

Can I cancel Cox without an early termination fee because of the merger?

Not by default. Charter hasn't announced a blanket waiver of early termination fees tied to the merger, and Cox says it will honor existing contract terms. The same promise that protects your locked price also keeps the fee in your agreement.

Cox's 12-month and 24-month term agreements charge a fee if you disconnect your service before the term ends, though each agreement lists some exceptions. Check your account or call Cox to see whether you're under a term agreement and when it ends. If you're on a month-to-month plan, there's no fee to worry about.
Once you're on a Spectrum plan, early termination fees stop being a factor, since Spectrum residential plans have no annual contracts.

Does my price lock or promo still apply if I move to a Spectrum plan?

Usually not. Your Cox price lock covers your Cox plan. Existing customers keep their current pricing and terms and move to new terms when their contracts expire, while customers who switch take on Spectrum's pricing.

Before you switch, do the math on the full term. A Cox price lock with 18 months left may beat a Spectrum promo that ends sooner. If you do switch, ask Spectrum to confirm your new price and how long it lasts in writing.

In California, state regulators require the Spectrum brand to keep honoring eligible "price for life" agreements.

Are there scams targeting Cox customers during the transition?

You can probably expect them. Scammers know Cox customers are seeing new logos and new offers right now, and they use that confusion to their advantage. Cox customers have been targeted before with fake emails during past service changes. Watch for these red flags:

  • Pressure to "migrate" your account. A call, text, or email saying your service shuts off unless you act right away is a classic phishing setup.
  • A discount that costs money up front. Spectrum says it never offers a discounted rate in exchange for a fee.
  • Unusual payment requests. Spectrum doesn't accept payment by gift card, Bitcoin, Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal.
  • Requests for your PIN or card number. Hang up and contact the company yourself through its app or official website.

Your safest move is to open the Cox app or the My Spectrum app yourself and check your account there. And for the record, no one at SmartMove will ever call or email you asking for payment for any service.

Moving During the Cox to Spectrum Transition

I'm moving into a former Cox area. Should I sign up with Cox or Spectrum?

Spectrum is your answer. New customers in former Cox markets get Spectrum's pricing and product lineup, so that's where your new service starts. That also means no data caps and no annual contract from day one.

New Internet customers without Cox phone services can also get a year of Spectrum Mobile free, so ask about it when you order. Want to see every option at your new address before you commit? Compare providers with SmartMove in one step.

I'm moving within a Cox area. Can I take my Cox plan with me?

Ask before you schedule anything. Charter has said existing customers can keep their Cox plans, but it hasn't publicly spelled out whether a Cox plan can follow you to a new address. If it can't, you'll start fresh on a Spectrum plan with no data caps and no annual contract.

  1. Call or chat at least two weeks before moving day. Ask whether your current Cox plan, price, and promo can transfer to your new address.
  2. Get the Spectrum price for the same speed. Compare the two side by side, including any equipment fees.
  3. Check your term agreement. If you're under contract, ask whether a move triggers an early termination fee.
  4. Line up your dates. Schedule service to start at the new place on or before move-in day, especially if you work from home.
  5. Return what you won't use. Our Cox guide covers equipment returns.

I'm moving out of the Cox footprint. What do I do with my service?

First, check whether Spectrum serves your new address. With 45 states in Spectrum's footprint, they’re more likely to follow you to your new place than Cox did.

If Spectrum isn't available in your new area, cancel your Cox service for the day after you move out. Check your term agreement for fees, and return any rented equipment so you don't get charged for it. If you took the free Spectrum Mobile line, ask what happens to it if you cancel home Internet.

Then find Internet and TV at your new address so you're connected from day one.

My apartment building had a bulk Cox deal. Does that change?

Not right away. Bulk deals are agreements between your property and the provider, so any change goes through your property owner, not you. Charter hasn't announced changes to existing bulk agreements, and Cox says it will honor existing contract terms.

Ask your property manager two things. Is the building's agreement moving to Spectrum, and if so, when? And can residents add services on their own, like Spectrum Mobile or a faster Internet tier?
