If you’re an existing Cox or Spectrum customer preparing for a move, we’ve got all the information you need to transfer your Internet service without interruption.
Getting ready for a big move? If you’ve already got Cox or Spectrum Internet service, we’ve got all the details you need for a smooth and seamless transition to your new place.
Are you moving soon and need to transfer your Internet service to your new home? Whether you want to move your current services or explore new plans, SmartMove has you covered. We’ll help you navigate the transfer process or find a new provider so your move doesn’t mean major downtime or interrupted connections.
And if you’re a Cox customer, you might be wondering what the recent merger with Spectrum means for your service. We’ll cover that here, along with how you can transfer existing Spectrum service, switch your Cox plan to a Spectrum package, or explore other providers that serve your new address.
Cox is Now Spectrum. What Does That Mean For Your Move?
Cox and Spectrum are now one company, and former Cox service areas have moved to Spectrum service, plans, and pricing. If you’re a Cox customer planning a move, your service and your new bill will now carry the Spectrum name, and you’ll manage your transfer through Spectrum. If you’re moving into a former Cox area, you’ll choose from Spectrum’s standard lineup of Internet, TV, mobile, and voice plans. Cox Internet customers who don’t already have a mobile plan may also qualify for a free year of Spectrum mobile service.
Are You a Current Cox or Spectrum Customer on the Move?
Transferring Internet service to your new address might be easier than you think, even during Spectrum’s acquisition of Cox.
For existing Cox customers:
- Visit Cox’s Moving Services page to log in to your account.
- Via the Cox website, submit notification of your move.
- Make updates to your package or plan.
- Take your Cox equipment with you or return it if you’re switching to a Spectrum plan.
For existing Spectrum customers:
- Visit the Spectrum moving page to check for availability at your new address.
- Call customer service at 888-692-8635 to schedule your move.
- Make sure your equipment is compatible with your new location before taking it with you or requesting new pieces.
What to Know When Transferring Cox or Spectrum Service to a New Address
As the parent company of Spectrum and now Cox, Charter Communications strives to make the moving process as smooth as possible, but there are a few extra things worth knowing to ensure your new setup goes off without a hitch.
How to Transfer Your Service
Here's what experienced customers suggest keeping in mind:
- Call first: The easiest way to transfer your service is to call Cox or Spectrum and speak with a representative who can walk you through the move process.
- Visit a store: Many users report that visiting a Cox or Spectrum store in person may lead to better support and even access to exclusive offers not available online or over the phone.
- Go to the website or app: While scheduling a move can be done via the Cox or Spectrum apps, some customers note that support over the phone or in-store tends to be more efficient, especially for existing Cox customers with questions about the switch to Spectrum.
Using Your Own Modem at the New Address
If you already own your modem or router, the good news is that you’ll likely be able to use it at your new home. However, there are a few key things to keep in mind:
- Fiber Internet Areas: If your new location has Fiber to the Home (FTTH), you may need to upgrade your equipment.
- Speed Tier Changes: If you choose a faster speed tier or if your current modem isn’t compatible with the speeds available at your new address, you may need to upgrade.
- Test Signal Levels: Once you arrive at your new home, hook up your equipment and check signal levels to see that you’re getting a strong, reliable connection.
Will You Need a Technician?
In many cases, you can self-install and get connected to Cox or Spectrum service on your own terms. But there are still times when calling in a technician is needed:
- The new home has never had Cox or Spectrum service.
- Wall outlets haven’t been activated.
- The signal at the new location needs optimization.
- You’re moving into a home with fiber service.
Managing Overlapping Service at Two Homes
If you need service at both your old and new address for a short time (like during the transition of your move), remember:
- You’ll need to temporarily have two separate accounts.
- Use different equipment at each location.
- Once you’ve fully moved, you can cancel the old account and return the equipment.
Are You a New Customer Looking into Cox or Spectrum Internet and TV Services?
If you’re planning a move and looking for a new Internet or TV provider, there are a few things you need to know. First, you won’t be able to start new Cox service since the merger has already taken place. Existing Cox customers can keep their plans for the time being, but new customers will need to choose a Spectrum plan.
When seeking new Internet service, make sure you check for promotions and deals for newcomers. Spectrum offers Internet plans as low as $30 a month, usually with a 12-month price lock. Find a range of packages between 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps so you can choose the Internet speed you need.If you also need TV service at your new home, Spectrum offers a range of live TV and streaming packages for all budgets and preferences.
Spectrum will even help those moving outside their service area find a new provider. Those receiving new equipment will be required to send their old devices back. Existing customers will be charged a fee that will be added to the next billing cycle, so be sure to check before your move. In cases where a technician has to make a house call or if the old service isn’t disconnected on time, customers may be charged an installation fee.
Self-Install Your Internet Services at Your Convenience
It’s easy and efficient to get connected at your convenience. While Cox installs are being phased out, you can still self-install new Spectrum service with minimal effort or technical know-how.
Once you’ve received or picked up your installation kit, simply download the Spectrum app and follow the self-installation steps. With no need to wait for a technician, you can seamlessly get your household online amidst the chaos of moving and settling in.
