An Overview of 10G Internet: Will it Arrive Soon?

What is 10G Internet and will it be available in your area soon? Find out everything you need to know about 10G networks and when to expect them.

(es)Internet Service Providers are constantly pushing the boundaries of Internet speeds to keep up with connectivity needs across the globe. That’s why you might be hearing a lot more about a future-proofed “10G Network” on the horizon. Once operational, 10G technology will provide the fastest and most advanced Internet connections ever experienced, enabling a new era of accessibility and possibilities.

Let’s talk about the basics of 10G and whether it's possible.

What is a 10G Network?

The “G” in 10G stands for “Gigabit.” Thus, the full name means 10 Gigabit.

Basically, 10G is an all-encompassing term for a host of broadband Internet technologies that facilitate both upload speeds and download speeds as fast as 10 gigabits per second (10 Gbps). For comparison, that’s ten times faster than the max speed of most current broadband networks!

Fiber Internet is considered to be the fastest broadband Internet option available. But with the introduction of the 10G platform, cable Internet networks are rapidly working to bridge the digital divide.

Overall, the goal of the 10G platform is to enhance our data-hungry lifestyles, making downloading, uploading, streaming, and virtual reality gaming more seamless than ever. This will become more and more important as new technologies, like the Apple Vision Pro, require lightning-fast Internet.

10G vs. 5G

Is 10G just 5G times two? Well, not exactly. While they sound similar, they’re based on different Internet service technologies and are used for different purposes. For example, 5G Internet refers to fifth generation wireless technology, which is primarily used for mobile phone networks.

Conversely, the 10G platform is a wired Internet technology that’s typically reserved for home Internet.

Does 6G Exist?

In terms of wired Internet connections, 6G does exist — and it’s unbelievably fast. However, it’s not as accessible as 5G home Internet and is only available in select markets.

On the other hand, next-generation 6G wireless technology is theoretical and still under development. In fact, companies like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have taken an active role in its creation. Experts estimate that 6G wireless could roll out to the masses around 2030.

How Fast is 10G?

By now, you know that 10 Gbps is fast, but how fast is it, exactly? At 10 Gbps, what used to take you several minutes to download would take only seconds. On a 10G platform, you will get a high-speed, low latency connection.

However, it’s important to remember that at the end of the day, your Internet speed will vary depending on network traffic, home network quality, and many other factors.

Is 10G Available Near Me?

For the most part, 10G networks are currently available in name only (for example, the Xfinity 10G Network). That means most companies offering speeds of 10 Gbps are really just providing top-of-the-line home Internet based on our current standards.

However, in 2021, Armstrong took the CableLabs 10G Challenge and released a 10G fiber optic network in Medina, Ohio. As of today, this technology is mostly available to commercial clients in Medina, but Armstrong is actively working to bring it to the entire community. Additionally, there have been successful tests of 10G Internet via multiple technologies, like Docsis 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet, etc.

That said, companies like Comcast Xfinity Internet offer 6G connectivity in select markets. So if you need increased bandwidth and faster speeds, we recommend checking with your provider.

When Will 10G Be Available Everywhere?

We’re a long way away from 10G being available to the masses. Based on current expectations, we won’t have widely available 10G Internet until the late 2020s or early 2030s. That said, when considering the rate of technological advancements when incorporating artificial intelligence, it could be much sooner.

What Type of Router Can Handle 10G?

If you want to use the fastest Internet available, you’ll need a router to support that. There aren’t many 10G routers available yet, but some brands, like ASUS, offer them.

It’s important to note that routers that can handle the fastest available Internet speeds are extremely expensive. It requires a large investment but if you’re serious about speed, it’s worth the cost.
